I really encourage people to take their time when it comes to choosing a name for their business. Most importantly take the time to do some basic research. A little work up front will save you many headaches in the future. Brainstorm some items and when you decide on your favorites do a simple Google search. See what comes up – are there any other businesses with the same name that pop up? If so, what type of business is it and where is it located? Keep in mind that you will need a domain name for your business so this is helpful to see if that domain is already taken. You can go to domain sites like GoDaddy to see if the domain you want is available and estimate the cost.
Tip: Once you do settle on a name it’s a good idea to buy several variations of the domain name even if you are not going to use them. Domains generally cost between $10-$20/year so it’s a small investment to protect your business.
Take time to look up all possible business names in the national trademark registry on the US Patent and Trademark Office website. If that name is already trademarked, cross it off your list. You can also search the registered businesses in your state to be sure that no other businesses have the same or a similar name. When deciding on a name keep in mind that you are building a business on this name – will it stand the test of time in 2 years, 5 years, 10 years or longer? You don’t want to outgrow your name or decide down the road that it was too trendy or too cute.
Don’t forget to check all social channels to ensure the handles you want are available. You can always make variations on social handles but if someone is searching for you, keep in mind what may come up if it’s not your business.
When choosing a name for your business try to keep it short and easy to remember. If you have a long name it’s more difficult for customers to remember and they will eventually shorten it anyway! If it can be just one word that is ideal. It’s very trendy to use two words together like Black Pig, Twisted Willow, Penny + Pine. If you decide to go this route, again think about in 10 years will this name still be relevant and does it truly reflect the feelings of your brand.
